Apple introduced the M1 at a virtual event on 10 November 2020, its first custom silicon for the Mac, in a new MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro and Mac mini. Apple said its 16-core Neural Engine runs 11 trillion operations per second.

Why it mattered Dedicated neural-network hardware, until then confined to Apple’s phones and tablets, arrived in laptops, moving more machine-learning work off servers and onto the device.
