California bans deceptive deepfakes near elections

Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 730 on 3 October 2019, barring distribution of materially deceptive audio or video of a candidate within 60 days of an election where a reasonable viewer would be misled, unless the media is clearly labeled as manipulated.

Why it mattered It was among the first American laws written for election deepfakes, and it reaches only the 60 days before a vote and only media that is not labeled.
